Join Our Community in Fighting Litter in Granville County

YOU can make a difference! We need volunteers to step up and help our efforts in each municipality and throughout the county.

Welcome to the Granville County Litter website. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate roadside litter in Granville County through awareness, education, and prevention, not removal. This along with community involvement, community pride, and enforcement will help us in our journey to reduce road side litter and community volunteers and concerned citizens are critical parts in the overall success of the program.

About Us

Granville Green was started in early 2025 as a county wide effort to reduce litter in Granville County. Monthly meetings were held throughout the year at the Granville County Convention & Expo Center, in Oxford. We shared concerns about litter, ideas on how to address it, and began reviewing litter programs in the surrounding counties to determine how other counties and towns were addressing the problem. We hoped to learn from other project that had proven success stories to jump start our efforts in Granville County.

From the initial meetings, representatives from each municipality, county services, the school system, law enforcement, elected officials, and community volunteers, joined in to help. We are just starting the journey and we have many miles to go.

Mission

To develop and create a sustainable, ever growing program, to reduce litter in Granville County, through education, awareness, education, enforcement, and community involvement. We urge everyone to be responsible with our limited resources, dispose of trash properly, and help pick up litter and recycle when possible.

Main Goals

  • Litter Prevention - The ultimate goal is to eliminate roadside litter in Granville County through prevention, not removal. Community involvement, community pride, and enforcement will help us in our journey.

  • Litter Education and Awareness – Education is vital and we are utilizing municipal kick-offs, ongoing programs and competitions in the schools, business and citizen involvement to help spread the word. Litter attracts more litter; it’s a vicious cycle and a terrible habit.

  • Community Involvement – Litter impacts everyone as it pollutes our water, devalues our properties, distracts from the natural beauty of the land, trashes our communities, consumes valuable resources to have it removed, and harms our wildlife. Accidental or deliberate littering by individuals and large-scale hauling, creates roadside litter which eventually gets into our drinking water via the waterways, rivers and streams, and leaches toxic chemicals, PFAS and microplastics into our water supply. Organized litter clean-ups, coupled with focusing on the source and reasons for litter, will help make a difference.

  • Reporting - Establish an easy and effective method for citizens to report litter trouble spots to the appropriate authority for investigation and cleanup. “See something, say something”.

  • Recycling – This is an area where everyone can do better. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is a major portion of our program. Utilize the correct dumpsters at the county convenience sites and separate litter for at-home pickup.

  • Support by local Law Enforcement and Courts– we seek active, consistent support from the various law enforcement agencies throughout the county, to catch and prosecute litterers.

Our Vision

Our vision is for everyone to understand how litter impacts the beauty of our country, our county, our towns and our communities. The water that we drink is directly impacted by the trash that litters our roadsides and pollutes our waterways. That plastic bag discarded on the roadside, eventually breaks down into thousands of small pieces and eventually flows to our water supply. If everyone will “pitch in” and “stop pitching out”, our planet will be a better place to live.
